Global HNW Analysis: The High Net Worth Handbook

Published by: Wealth-X
Published on:
The fifth edition of this flagship report analyses the state of the world’s ultra high net worth (UHNW) population, or those with $30m or more in net worth, and this year revealed global growth of 3.5% to 226,450 individuals and a 1.5% increase of their total combined wealth to $27 trillion.

The first edition of the High Net Worth Handbook provides unique HNW analysis, uncovering the state of the world’s millionaire population (those with between $1m and $30m in net worth), which rose by 1.9% to 22.4m people in 2018 and is forecast to increase by another 6.2% over the next five years.

The Wealth-X High Net Worth Handbook complements our other flagship reports, the World Ultra Wealth Report and the Billionaire Census, in an effort to provide a complete HNW analysis of the individuals who comprise the highest tiers of wealth.

In addition to this dramatic rise in population and wealth, the High Net Worth Handbook 2019 uncovers numerous trends among this exclusive population, including:

TEN COUNTRIES ACCOUNT FOR 72.5% OF THE GLOBAL HNW POPULATION

  • The 10 countries with the largest HNW populations grew in total by over 387,000 HNW individuals (up 2.4%) compared with 2017, with combined net worth in these countries rising by an annual $1.0tn (up 2.4%).

NEW YORK IS HOME TO THE MOST HNW INDIVIDUALS

  • While New York saw its HNW population shrink by 0.6% in 2018, with just below a million HNW individuals the Big Apple still retains a HNW population that is 65% larger than the second city in our top 10, Tokyo.  In addition, six of the top 10 cities in our ranking are in the US.

A MORE EQUITABLE GENDER SPLIT

  • The HNW population exhibits a more equitable gender split than the ultra wealthy population but remains heavily male dominated. Additionally, a significantly larger proportion of the HNW population is purely self-made in comparison to their ultra-wealthy counterparts.

ASIA IS EXPECTED TO GROW IN HNW POPULATION AND WEALTH

  • Asia is forecast to experience the strongest growth in the number of HNW individuals and combined wealth, with the region’s HNW population projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 7.6% over the next five years.

In addition to revealing a global view of the status and trends of the wealthy, the High Net Worth Handbook 2019 also examines the population based on their asset holdings, gender, industry focus, wealth source, education, and hobbies with a special breakdown of sports interest by wealth tier.
