HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE AN INDIVIDUAL TO GENERATE A NET WORTH THAT PLACES THEM IN THE TOP TIERS OF WEALTH?
For high net worth (HNW $1-4 million) individuals, very high net worth (VHNW $5-29 million) individuals, and ultra high net worth (UHNW $30 million and above) individuals, the routes to their fortunes widely vary. While some slowly accumulate wealth over a lifetime, others reap the benefits of an inheritance, business venture, or wise investing at a young age.
We mined hundreds of thousands of records in the Wealth-X Global Database to identify the wealthiest individual at every age from age 21 (born in 1997) to age 100 (born in 1918).
Compared to last year, the combined wealth of these individuals has increased by 24%, to a whopping $1.74trn, but has remained constant at 2% of the global gross domestic product.
Americans make up 38% of the list, Europeans 23%, and Asians, 30%.
Women form 15% of the list, a slightly higher proportion than among the total UHNW population.
While some individuals, like Frances Bean Cobain (26) or Jacqueline Mars (79), have a net worth that has been generated most from inheritance, others like Giorgio Armani (84) and Larry Page (45) have a net worth that is entirely self-made.
